Ntwanano Safaris: Lowveld to Maputo Arts & Architectural Safari

Departs from Nelspruit area: R8,500 per person (min. 2 people)

DAY 1: The Artist’s Press, Graskop Hotel and Flycatcher castle

Meet & greet in Nelspruit or White River then drive to the Artist’s Press to be welcomed by Mark Attwood – a Lithographer and Printer who spends time preparing limited edition works to be printed.

After this we drive to Graskop and check in at Graskop Art Hotel. Each room at this special hotel is a work of art, installed by some of South installed by some of South Africa’s best known artists who have left their distinctive personal “fingerprints” and philosophies in the form of chandeliers made of mattresses, wall coverings made of plastic hangers, rear-view mirrors at the dressing table and more… a seriously strenuous sensory workout.

Finish the day with a visit to the Flycatcher castle, designed and completed by sculptor and owner Manie Connoway along a 16th century European style. The Castle boasts with its own unique art gallery, an abundance of European antique furniture.

DAY 2: Chissano Museum and Pancho Guedes

After an early breakfast and check out, enjoy a guided tour of the rooms of the hotel, the hotel’s the MAP (Modern Art Project) and Sunshine Gallery all exposing works representing up and coming contemporary artists in South Africa today.

The tour catapults you from the serene hills of the Lowveld across the Lebombo border to the vibrant, vastly different Mozambique. A lunch of delicious seafood and a cold glass of locally brewed “2M – or Dosh Em” beer is the perfect introduction to what lies ahead.

Visit Chissano Gallery, a fundamental introduction to art in Mozambique. The spirit of Mozambique’s armed struggle is ever-present in the totem-pole-like carvings skinny, desperate humans crushed under the clumsy, uncaring feet of fat figures perched victoriously on top. This is followed by another visit the Sagrada Familia Church; this gem of the 50s is a fine example of Pancho Guedes’ unique architectural style. The Sagrada Familia Church is shaped like a ship’s hull, replacing the dragons with crosses and then repeating the motif of the Latin cross throughout, this is a perfect example of the Portuguese Art Deco architecture.

Check-in at Cardoso Hotel – another Art Deco building from the 1920s. Dinner and entertainment in Maputo is rich with choice. Will it be seafood, bought at the fish market, cooked on coals on the beach? Will it be a seafood platter at the Maputo Boat Club? Or will it be jazz and snacks at the iconic Old Railway Station? Whatever the choice, you will fall into bed, with images and emotions stirred by the artists of the day.

DAY 3: Museu de Arte & many more art deco buildings

After Breakfast you will go on either a walking tour (optional) or take drive through numerous art deco houses and flats from the 1930s onwards to include the Natural History Museum, the Geology Museum as well as more of Pancho Guedes’ fusion of fun, function and form. This sensory feast ends across the border in Matsulu with a shisanyama (barbeque) at Chilas Conna.

With the cool breeze blowing across the Crocodile river, a clear African sky embellished with the tranquil stars of the Southern Cross and a slipper-moon – all one can wish for is more of the same.
