Avoid the winter blues

There’s a definite winter chill in the air these days. And while the temperatures drop between early evening and early morning, the days, with loads of African sun and mild temperatures, are ideal for holidaying.

KwaZulu-Natal has possibly the best winter climate in the country, with delightfully warm days and very mild nights. And there’s so much to do, especially along the coast. The beaches attract holiday makers in droves; build sand castles on the shore or brave the waves for a spot of surfing, or simply relax to the sound of the water lapping up against the beach.

The one place you’re sure to find entertainment is uShaka Marine World, on the south end of the Durban Beachfront. Shoot down the water slides, meet dolphins and seals, feed fish and Spotted Eagle rays, and have your photo taken with a giant anaconda replica at Dangerous Creatures. There’s so much to do at uShaka, one visit may not be enough.

Anchoring the north end of the beachfront is the Suncoast Casino. With an array of restaurants and fast food outlets, kid’s entertainment, eight cinemas, the Sundeck and the Boardwalk, the complex offers something for everyone.

If you’re looking to get out of the country, check out the Holiday Factory. The team has put together some really great deals for Phuket (Thailand), with accommodation at Best Western Premier Bangtao and flights included in the price. There are also great deals for Zanzibar (Tanzania), where the equatorial location of the country makes for a balmy winter holiday.

If you’re considering Phuket, you have to look at KEE Resort & Spa near Patong Beach. The hotel and plaza complex is a Thai-owned Avant garde tropical retreat with a vast lagoon-like swimming pool and contemporary Sino-Portuguese theme in the heart of Thailand’s most popular tourist destination.

Winter is possibly the best time to visit Mauritius, when the temperature sits around 21°C. Lux* Resorts & Hotels has taken an interesting approach to its offering, believing that mixing things up is the best way enjoy a holiday. Keep your eyes open for a pop-up ice-cream cart, an alfresco cinema, a complementary bottle wine hiding in the bushes and a host of other surprizes that show off Lux*’s spontaneous side.

If the cold weather is getting you down, make a plan to get out of town and rejuvenate your soul with loads of sun.
